Building the Six-Hour Canoe is a wonderful way to get afloat. Quickly and simply built, the Six-Hour Canoe is suitable for builders and paddlers young and old.

Inexpensive to build, using common tools and materials, it can give almost anybody access to boat building and to a boat. The Six-Hour Canoe is constructed from a single 4' x 16' sheet of marine plywood and a few pieces of dimensional lumber. When constructed with epoxy glued seams, it remains leak free from the moment it is put in the water.

The Six-Hour Canoe was the brainchild of Mike O'Brien. Originally designed as an easily built and inexpensive boat for use by oceanography students, it has been adapted by the Center for Watercraft Studies as a multi-purpose vehicle. Suitable as a personal boat - light and easy to carry and handle - it is also an ideal boat for introductory boat building courses and for community and school based boat building experiences. Many of these boats have been built by fifth and sixth graders.
